Made it to the Ice

I made it to Antarctica safe and sound! I don't have too much to report except that I have my issued clothing and all my baggage made it down here, I have had two good meals so far, I have a nice dorm room that I share with one other girl, and I have internet access.

Here are some photos I've taken this morning and this afternoon......
Just after I got off of the plane on the ice sheet...
The galley (yay for food)

This is looking out across the ice sheet
Most of the dorms. My room is in the building with the person in the red parka in front of it.

  3. Did you say "Holy shit!" when you got off the plane? I think I probably would have. Also, apparently Antarctica is seeking bakers: http://www.getbakerjobs.com/high-volume-baker-in-antarctica-centennial-colorado-2687861.htm

  4. Annie- I have survival training in a couple days. Between now and then I have other training and orientations, planning and scheduling of lab and field work to work out, and simply adjusting to this new world.
David- Yes... I was blown away. The landscape is spectacular. Maybe the current bakers are leaving. So far every meal has had pretty good looking baked goods. I've only tried the banana bread that was out for dessert last night. This morning there were oodles of pastries and baked good to supplement scrambled eggs, sausages, potatoes, omelets, oatmeal, yogurt, etc. that was also out for breakfast.

  6. I am so envious, Julie! I've been wanting to go there for years. Enjoy your time and be careful! Fabulous pictures. And sounds like the food is wonderful. Wish I had the experience to apply for a position there! Jill Patterson (still with Girl Scouts)

  7. Thank you, Jill!! There are all kinds of non science positions down here from dish washers to carpenters to janitors to machinists to desk jockeys to truck drivers. I met a woman today who drives a massive people moving vehicle- it's her first season down here and she is 65!
